Hi, I’m Laura Caroline!
I am a scientist, maker, and aspiring mechanical engineer innovating
at the intersection of robotics and healthcare at Vanderbilt University.
🦾⚙️
I have a passion for improving medical technologies through groundbreaking research, which I have pursued throughout campus and the greater Nashville community. Currently, I work in Goldfarb Lab to design, build, and quantify systems to stress-test prosthetic legs in challenging terrain. Ultimately, this work will inform future improvements to Goldfarb Lab's novel prosthetic knee. In my previous research experience, I collaborated with my team to restore peristaltic function to patients with esophageal disorders with a novel robotic stent device, as recently published in Advanced Functional Materials.
Outside of lab, I seek out design competitions where I can work with a dedicated team. As an executive member of Engineering World Health Vanderbilt, I co-lead the invention of An Affordable Solar- and Low-Pressure-driven Water Treatment System. I continued to challenge my rapid prototyping skills to provide liters of autoclave-ready purified water for low-resource hospitals. More recently, my one-of-a-kind collaboration to create a fish-operated vehicle (F.O.V.) received praise in competition among other SyBBURE Searle Undergraduate Research Fellows.
I believe strongly in democratized access to hands-on STEM education. As a regular volunteer in Metro Nashville Public Schools, I teach science lessons with Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science (VSVS). I have spent years advocating for pediatric cancer research and awareness, and I have recently launched a social media presence (@lc.makes) dedicated to STEM communication. Additionally, as I pursue Spanish fluency in college, I strive to support STEM education for people across language barriers.
On a personal note, I hail from Tampa, Florida, where I grew up tinkering, dancing, and becoming wickedly good at Connect Four. My Sunshine State roots mean that I never let a good sunny day go to waste— you can catch me in a hammock listening to my favorite podcasts, crocheting yet another tote bag, or chatting with friends.
